My Backyard Stories Continue

I just had the most interesting, disgusting, surprising yet expected reminder of the ugly hate some people carry around in their hearts.  We have this sign in the front yard of the house where Deb’s parents used to live.

.... Neighbors – No matter where you are from, we're glad you're our

The house has been sold so we had a yard sale today to jettison a bunch of junk. After a little while an elderly lady pulls up to check things out.  As I walk up to her she asks, “Is this your sign?”  I say, “Yes.  It is.”  She says, “You don’t know what you’re asking.”  To which I say, “I’m not asking you to do anything.  I am just telling you how I feel.”  Then I added, “These are some of the most beautiful people I have ever met.”  With some feeling, she says, “They are murderers.”  I quietly replied, “Americans are muderers too.”  Surprisingly, but not really, she says, “But this is America!”  At this point I’m pretty sure I’m not going to win a popularity contests with this lady and I think to myself, “Does she even HEAR what she is saying?”  Then, she adds, “I hope they move in next door to you.”  To which I calmly say, “I have had them living in my house.”  She says, “Then keep them.”  As she walked off she says, “You need to open your eyes.” I kindly said back to her, “As do you, dear.”

I know there are those who fear foreigners coming to the United States and some of them (like the woman I encountered) ape the hate and misinformation being stuffed down their throats.  I cannot change their hate, but maybe I can show them what it means to accept and appreciate others.  I admit it, I got a little perturbed with her ignorance and prejudice.  But, after I cooled off, I decided I need to pray for her.  Not just for her, but for me too.  She needs to see humans as humans and I need to see her and her ilk as humans who need a good example.
